Booktalk:
It had been six months since the accident. Six month since Emily had been able to walk or swim normally. Six month since she had lost her brother Jon . . . or at least the presence of his physical body. Because Jon, or his spirit, still resided in the cellar of their house even though the car accident had been on the way home from a swim meet that they two of them had participated in and nowhere near the house. Emily never saw Jon, or his spirit, but she could feel his presence and hear his familiar voice inside her head. But only in the basement. But now, her mother wanted to move, and her father was going along with it. They wanted to start at a new house without the memories of her beloved older brother. But if they left, she'd never see or hear Jon again, because he was unable to leave the confines of the cellar. She had to see to it that no one would buy the house. She started with intercepting phone calls from the realtor and seeing that meetings between her and Emily's parents never happened. Once they finally got together, she kept pulling out the 'For Sale' sign from the front of the house. When people came to look at the house, she would find a moment alone to tell them horror stories about the house, neighbors, making sure that anything important to the prospective buyers would be negatively impacted by purchase of the house. And, it worked . . . for a while. Sam Marsh 3/2004
