Booktalk:
Lucinda was a misfit as a fairy. For one thing, Lucinda was apt to do the unthinkable and actually appear and disappear right in front of everyone…showing off her skills so to speak. But Lucinda had a good heart and loved to bestow gifts on newborns. Unfortunately, she tended to act without thinking about the consequences.
Thus, when Lucinda saw me crying through my first hour of life, she took my tears for inspiration, looked at my Mother in sympathy, touched my nose, and proclaimed, “My gift is obedience. Ella will always be obedient. Now stop crying, child.”
I stopped.
Unfortunately, I was obedient to any direct instruction, good or bad, whether I willed it or not, given me by anyone, relation, king or outlaw. Who, Prince or pauper, would want a wife who must do anyone’s bidding. My future was not a bright one. Is it any wonder that I became the drudge for my stepmother and stepsisters after my mother died? The girl with cinders in her hair, CinderElla!
