Booktalk:
What was it? Six schools in two years. And now, friendly Mrs. Greenleaf had been replaced by Maria, heretofore to be known as Ms. Attila the Hun. No excuses moved her, so I was forced to finally (one week late) attend my first day of class at Wetherford Junior High. Ms. Attila had left my rollarblades in my backpack, so I put them on as soon as she pulled away, and zoomed across the schoolyard, only to be distracted by the ultimate vision of loveliness. Claire, her name was. Unfortunately, I was so entranced by her that I didn’t watch where I was going and I ran right into J.D. (Judgement Day) Harms. The biggest, baddest dude at Wetherford Junior High. J.D. wouldn’t take an apology, and tried to make me into minced meat, but my quickness (and a few tricks my army colonel dad taught me) kept me in one piece. Then, Bertram offered to help out by distracting J.D. for the day until his dull brain forgot about me. Unfortunately, J.D. ran into me later in the day, determined to pulverize me. I escaped into a lab, and made sure that a bunch of equipment got broken while J.D. was chasing me around. I also made sure that J.D. stepped in the mess while I stayed clear of it, and set J.D. up to be restrained and punished by the teachers who heard the racket he created. Suddenly, there was a rumble of thunder, and flashes of lightning. The teachers ran off, and J.D. grinned wildly saying something like: “Its true, the M.I.N.D. machine, the past, the stories, all true!” Then, I was floating…and there were dinosaurs running all over the school…three raptors cornered Will Reilly and said,”That’s the one, the only one who can stop it.” Suddenly, I was in the past. As a dinosaur…a dilophosaurus. So was Bertram…as another of the species…we were like brothers. Only, there were a bunch more of the students there, in all sorts of dino bodies. Even old J.D. (yippee skippee!!) was there—as a harmless meat-eating brontosaurus (okay, like an apatosaurus). Dinosaurs from every age of the known past, gathered together in one locale, in one time. It was weird. Stegosaurs, Compys, Maisaura. Pachy’s, diplodocus, spinosaurus, archaeopteryx and more. Something had obviously gone quite wrong, and it appeared that Bertran and his M.I.N.D. machine were the root cause…Only, the M.I.N.D. machine was in the past with us, and it was ruined. Then we were contacted by Will Reilly who had been to an alternate “Dinoverse” who said that the only way to save either reality was for us to repair the M.I.N.D. machine, and quickly. Oh, and by the way, the volcano (whose base we had landed beneath) was set to blow in two days.
