Booktalk:
Day of Trial/List of New Students Accepted by the School of the Royal Dancers Number 1) Cerinthe Gale of Normost. My dream had been fulfilled. Ever since I can remember, I have dreamed of being a dancer. It was my mother’s dying wish. My father and I had traveled all the way from Normost, to the capital of Windward, the royal island of Faranor for the yearly trials at the School of the Royal Dancers. Me, Cerinthe Gale, a commoner. And, I had been selected. As the top of the incoming class. So, why aren’t I happy? Why hasn’t the Sea Maid sung to me since my mother’s death? Why do I feel a dread, rather then joy, when I think of my future? I was an aspiring folk healer on the Island of Normost. But, mother died under my care, and from lack of ability and knowledge of healing. Since then, I have been in constant fear of harming those around me with medical advice, so I followed my mothers last wish to follow the dream to become a famous dancer. At Normost, my dancing had always been in sight of the sea and was performed for joy. At the school, I never see the sea or feel the wind in my face. I am shut off from the world and dancing only for others, using their interpretations and feelings. It seems as if the Sea Maid has forsaken me for her failure to save my mother. Suddenly the dream no longer seems so important.
