Booktalk:
The sea called out to Sophie “Come in, Come out, Sail on!” At night, she would dream a terrible dream of a wall of water, black as night, towering over her, and then down, down, down it came…and then she’d wake up.
Thus, when dad, his brothers, Stew and Dock, my cousin Brian and I decided to sail across the ocean, it was only natural that Sophie would beg a place on the 45-foot sailboat, the Wanderer, with us. Her mom (my aunt) threatened to string up her brothers if anything happened to Sophie on the way.
Dad, Stew, and Mo tried to talk her out of it…”Not the right place for a girl…a lot of hard work.” But, Sophie isn’t afraid of work and is a bit mule-headed to boot. So, she’s joining us on our trip to England to see Bompie, grandpa, who moved back ‘home’ several years ago.
On the way, we each get to teach something to the others. Being the clown of the crew, I decid to teach juggling. Cousin Brian, being the tightlipped, serious type, thought it was a stupid thing to teach. Then again, I didn’t think much of his long-winded tedious explanations of “points of sail” and other sailing lingo…boooorrrrriiiiinnnngggg! Sophie, on the other hand, decided to teach us al Bompie stories. Which is rather interesting since….well, you see, Sophie has never met Bompie. Bompie moved to England before Sophie became my cousin.
You see Sophie was ADOPTED only three years ago by my aunt and uncle.
