Booktalk:
Dad got laid off in Mid-March. By the end of the summer, he still hadn't started looking for a job. Or helped much around the house. Lacy, my 18-year-old older sister, had taken care of the cooking after working the early shift at Pizza Corner. Mom had gone back to work as a temp account executive for an advertising agency (17 years after her last outside job) to keep the household solvent. No benefits, no medical or dental coverage...and no paid vacation. And, dad's unemployment was about to run out.
So, dad bought a new driver. Titanium club head, precision tungsten screws, graphite head. Expensive!!! You see dad was trying to find himself. He was coming up on his 49th birthday and taking some time out to re-evaluate his life. He'd always wanted to be a golfer, but he wasn't so delusional as to think he could actually join the senior pro golfing tour...was he?!
We must have had fifty motivational speakers during ninth grade, and all had the same two messages. The same two messages that dad had always had for me;
Have a dream and follow it, whatever it is, wherever it leads you.
You can achieve your dream if you just believe in yourself and work hard and never give up.
And, Now that school was about to start, Lacy was going to stop cooking. Leaving us on our own.
