Rhita Gawr, long ago banished by Merlin, has returned as a wraith to the Realm of Avalon and has subverted a crystal of elano so that instead of creating, the crystal destroys. His plan is to conquer Avalon, the realm between the world of man and that of the gods. But, the evil one is still leery of the heir of Merlin, whom it is foretold, may be his downfall. He is determined to destroy Tamwyn, his brother Scree, the birdman, and their friend, the apprentice priestess Elli. The crystal’s first attempt succeeds in destroying the Lone remaining Unicorn and injures Scree.
Tamwyn is determined to find a way into the branches of the great tree with his staff and then further upward to find a way to relight the disappearing stars before Rhita Gawr’s plans reach fruition. Scree must be left behind with some of his brethren to heal. And, Elli has to visit the Lady of the Lake and neutralize the subverted elano, further splintering the group.
Is there time to accomplish their tasks? Will the assassin that Rhita Gawr employs destroy Elli before she can reach the blackened crystal? Will Scree be able to return his brethren to the path of right?
