Booktalk:
Even as a little girl Emeralda had loved the swamp. It was a magical place, even for a clumsy princess, whose braying-donkey laugh could scare the birds out of the trees. It was especially lovely because her mother never went there. On the day the Queen invited Prince Jorge to the castle, Emeralda ran to the swamp. She had never liked Prince Jorge, and he spent so much time admiring himself, that he wouldn't even notice if she wasn't there. In the swamp that day, she met Prince Eadric. Or so he said. He looked like a frog. A talking frog, but still, a frog. When the frog learns that Emeralda is a princess, he tries to get her to kiss him! But Emeralda refuses. She hardly knows him, after all. The next day, the Queen announces that she's arranged for Emeralda to marry Prince Jorge. Emeralda is so upset, she runs back to the swamp - she has to talk to someone, and Eadric the frog has been good company. She tells him all her woes, (Prince Jorge is in love with himself - he's rude, he never lets anyone forget he's a prince!) and blurts out "I'd rather kiss you than Prince Jorge any day!" Well, Eadric is not going to miss an opportunity like that! He jumps up beside her, and puckers his lips "wait a minute" "You haven't changed your mind, have you?" "No, no, it's just that … well, here." Emeralda pulled out a handkerchief and patted the frog's mouth clean. "You had dried fly feet stuck to your lips" This time the kiss went without a hitch. Emeralda leaned down, puckered her lips, and closed her eyes. The frog's lips felt cool and smooth. The sensation wasn't too unpleasant. It was what happened next that took her by surprise. Now, tell me, what's supposed to happen when a princess kisses a frog? And what do you think happens in this book? (show cover)
