My name is Tabitha Twitchit. My mistress died last night. Miss Dimity found her slumped over her upholstered chair in the sitting room, where only yesterday she had presided over tea and cake at the celebration of Miss Tolliver’s 65th birthday. Miss Dimity said “Oh Dear.” I said She died last night. And I gave a long sad sigh and said I’ve been keeping watch. Miss Dimity said, “But of course you and Miss Tolliver have been together for ages and ages, you’ll miss her. You must be hungry. Come home with me and I’ll give you something to eat. I told her, “Thank you all the same, but I’ll just stay with Miss Tolliver. I had mouse last night and if you would be so kind as to bring me a bowl of milk with a bit of bread in it that would be nice. And with that Miss Dimity hurried home to fetch her brother, Miles.
