Booktalk:
Whittington didn’t just move into the barn as if he owned it like most cats would have. No, Whittington actually asked the lady (the ugliest duck he had ever seen) for a place in the barn. He told her his story about his boy being sent off to a special school and how the boy’s parents had never loved Whittington. He had left before they threw him out.
In exchange for a place in the barn, Whittington offered his services as a ratter. Since most cats were afraid of rats, that sealed the deal with the rest of the animals. Except for the rats of course, who eventually agreed to a truce with the other animals.
But, it was Whittington’s story of his namesake that helped to fill the days of the menagerie in the barn with pleasure.
