Memere, Aiden’s grandmother, was going crazy. Or at least that’s what one of his uncle’s said. He’d caught her talking to someone when there was no one there. He’d tried to get to move away from the mountain and sell him her land, but Memere had refused.
And now, Aiden and his mother had moved in with Memere in the far northern Vermont wilderness. The so-called Northeast Kingdom between Quebec and New Hampshire: the poorest region of one of the poorest states. Aiden’s dad had died in a car accident, and now his mother was returning to her roots, trying to distance herself and Aiden from the pain and loss.
Every night Memere would go for a walk and disappear for a while. Then one night Aiden followed her. He watched her fill a pitcher with water, use it to fill a bowl in a clearing, and then prick her finger and let the blood drop into the bowl. And then, the shades…the ghosts…began to drink…
