Booktalk:
Luther's mom has great advice for him on how he should live his life. For example, "It's better to be feared than loved." "Stay off the sucker path." "It's not what you know that's important, it's who you know."
Luther's mom has built an empire of slum housing and group homes for crazy old men. She is so strict and harsh that Luther has nicknamed her "The Sarge".
But Luther is not like the Sarge. He understands what is important to him, doesn't necessarily revolve money making schemes.
He just wants to win the science fair this year. It will be his third time winning and that should lead him right up the path to college and getting out of Flint, Michigan (and away from the Sarge) as quickly as possible.
His friend, Sparky, thinks the way out is by hiring Dontay Gaddy, a smooth lawyer whose toll free number is 1-800 Sue-Them-All. Sparky has to find a reason to sue someone! Luther gets caught up in a plan to help Sparky bust open his head so he can sue Taco Bell. It doesn't work of course.
So between his mom (the Sarge) and Sparky's crazy schemes, Luther has to keep it together to win the science fair. But will he lose Shayla Patrick a.k.a the love of his life?
Will Sparky find a way to "Sue Them All"?
And will Sarge rule Luther's world forever?
