Booktalk:
In Mark’s family it’s become a tradition to undertake a grueling wilderness canoe trip as a mark of approaching manhood. Mark wasn’t too happy about it in the first place, but the fact that he was doing it with his diabetic cousin made it even worse. Outdoorsmen they were not.
Nevertheless, Mark and Randy set off on their 10 day trip, disgruntled, but resigned. They realize, early on, that to survive they would need to work together; to enjoy it, they would need to get along. In time, they learn to do both - survive and enjoy, as they canoe, camp, fish, and outsmart the lake terrain: they were getting just a little bit smug.
And then one morning a bear intrudes on their campsite, eating all their food. And that spells danger for a diabetic! With the trip only half over, everything now begins to go wrong. The boys desperately fight to find their way back to civilization... making some very bad decisions along the way.
The 10-day trek turns ugly, and what was supposed to be a fun adventure turns into a life-and-death struggle. Time is running out for Randy. Mark, who has never done an heroic thing in his life, now faces the ultimate challenge, to save himself, and, if possible, his dying cousin.
