Booktalk:
Mom and dad were gone off with Billy's parents, and Fin had slipped out to see Billy even though he wasn't supposed to. But, Ella had insisted that she'd be fine alone in the house with her three-year-old Sam. But, even at thirteen (13), she wasn't fine. Nope, she was scared to death. Especially with the storm. But the tapping kept on and she had to go downstairs to check it out. She reached for the phone, then told herself that it was something simple and she had to overcome her fear. She walked into the sitting room and TAP! She jumped! It was the window. She pulled back the curtain and started to laugh. A chain from a hanging flower basket had broken loose and every so often the wind would make the metal ring strike the glass. She reached out to close the curtain. She froze in horror as she saw the reflection of a huge man in the doorway behind her. "Don't hurt me. Please don't hurt me. What do you want?" "YOU." She dashed to the bookcase, released the catch to the hidden door and slipped through. She ran through the passageway to the kitchen, up the stairs to Sam's room, woke him up and had him hide in the wall cupboard all the way in the back. She raced to the landing, tore down the stairs, heard the pounding of footsteps as she raced toward the front door. A hand caught her t-shirt as she raced out the back door, but she wriggled free into the garden screaming at the top of her voice. Trapped. Too far from any other houses to be heard, especially with the storm. She tried going limp, but he threatened to break her spine. When he yanked her to her feet, and pulled her towards the gate, she followed without resistance. Crying. Sam Marsh 3/2004
