Booktalk:
Hi, my name is Charlie…actually, you’ve probably heard about me. I’m the Charlie from Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I’m sure you know the old story—how I found one of the five golden tickets and then was given a tour of the chocolate factory by Willie Wonka himself. Unfortunately, the other five lucky winners were some of the most stupid children I have ever met—they are what make adults think we’re all idiots. There was Augustus Gloop, who was enormously large and loved to eat; Veruca Salt, she was the bossy spoiled brat; Violet Beauregarde, the dim-witted gum-chewer with the fastest jaws around; and Mike Teavee, the toy pistol-toting cowboy gangster who was obsessed with television. Because each child was so ridiculously foolish, awful things happened to them while in the factory—by the end of the tour, all that was left was Grandpa Joe and me. This is when I got the greatest news ever…even greater than when I found the last golden ticket in the gutter…Willie Wonka told me that he was going to give ME the chocolate factory. Well, I’m getting ahead of myself…first we climbed into the great glass elevator and it wisked us through the roof. That’s when he told me I had won the chocolate factory. After that, we went and picked up the rest of my family in the elevator to go live the chocolate factory …and this is where my story actually begins. Now, picture this, a great glass elevator with my parents, Mr. And Mrs. Bucket, Grandpa George, Gramma Georgina, Gramma Josephine, Grampa Joe and then, of course Willie Wonka and me. Thanks to Mr. Wonka and a couple of buttons that did (and did not) get pushed, we found ourselves orbiting space in a great, glass elevator. A super American space hotel, ferocious battles with the dread Vermicious Knids, weird and wondrous pills, Minusland, Gnoolies, a nervous President, and a most unusual Vise President were only part of our adventures in “Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator.”
