Olive’s Ocean by Kevin Henkes
Every summer Martha’s family goes to her grandmothers’ house at the ocean. Martha loves it there, & gets “a glittery” feeling when she goes. This is how she describes it: CD1 track 2
This year, on the day before their annual trip, a woman comes to their house & gives a page from her daughter’s journal to Martha. Her daughter, Olive, was killed in a bike accident the month before. Olive & Martha weren’t friends, but in her journal she had written that she hoped they could be. She also wrote that she wanted to be a writer when she grew up, & that she loved the ocean. Martha had just decided that she wanted to be a writer, & here she was leaving for the ocean the next day—weird coincidences.
While staying @ her grandmother’s, she decides to get a jar full of ocean to give Olive’s mother when she gets home. While filling the jar, she steps off a sandbar & almost drowns. In that short amount of time, her world changes.
Find out what happens when Martha goes to give the ocean to Olive’s mother.
