Flaed had finally gotten a spark of interest to out her brother Edward by secretly reading the book and then relating what she had read to him in the short times they had together. But, then her father had ruined everything. He had promised Flaed’s hand in marriage to Ethelred of Mercia, his friend and ally. Further, she was to have a personal guardian who would go with her everywhere. He was quiet and as unobtrusive as possible, Red was. Send by Ethelred to guarantee her safety. Of course, she had to escape him. First to finish the book, and then to escape entirely. She figured out how to do so, riding the horses further and further into the pasture and then slipping off the side of one into an earthwork wall which would hide her. Everything worked out perfectly until the heavy sack descended over her head. A gag was stuffed into her mouth and her only thought was where is Red. Her plan had worked only too well.
