Booktalk:
It was the last day of our old lives, but we didn't even know it. Aunt Euterpe from distant Chicago asked my mother, myself (Rosie), Lottie my older sister, and 7-year-old Brother Buster, to visit her to attend the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. We didn't think there was a chance, but Lottie was infatuated with Everett, who was working for our neighbors the Shattucks. Mommy wanted to separate the two before things got out of hand. Before we knew it, we were on our way to Chicago...minus mother, and plus grandpa, who had retrieved her ticket from a letter mom had given him to send to aunt Euterpe, and Pip, grandpa's dog.
Aunt Euterpe was still in mourning and separated from society, three years after the passing of her late, rich, older husband. She was timid and scared of others; even her servants who tried to run the place their way. We would soon change all that.
