Booktalk:
It all started with a bad dream. Nick woke up with his heart pounding and a feeling that he had lost something important, but he couldn’t put his finger on what the problem was. Next he’s accused of ignoring Miss Bell, up at Briggs Pond earlier that day. Only thing was, he hadn’t BEEN to Briggs Pond in over a week, so it couldn’t have been him, yet she insisted it was. Confused, Nick heads up to the pond to see if he can figure out why Miss Briggs might have thought he had been there. But when he looks in the pond for answers, and sees NO Reflection, he’s really unnerved. Now, you have to understand, Nick Hodges had always been a troublesome boy; growing up an orphan in his Uncle Jack’s care in a small New England town wasn’t exactly easy and Nick wasn’t always the perfect kid. But when people begin seeing him in places where he wasn’t (like at Briggs Pond or throwing rocks at the church), Nick becomes suspicious. It’s as if his reflection had escaped and was causing trouble for him all over the town. A knocked over gravestone, a strange kid (his mirror image) running from him in the woods, and more sightings of Nick in places where he wasn’t leave him searching for answers – before the townsfolk take matters into their own hands and put the troublesome, crazy teen away for good.
