Booktalk:
The demon bear had killed da. Knowing that, he had sent Torak away. But first, he had made Torak promise to travel north to the Mountain of the World Spirit in order to save the world. But—no one’s ever found it, Torak protested. Your guide will find you, his father assured him. Torak had left after putting the death marks on his father. Then his father yelled “Run” and Torak heard the horrible roar of the bear. His father yelled again, and Torak turned and ran. The wolf cub was confused. He had been exploring above the Den when the Fast Wet had come roaring through. He had been spared, but all he could think was that his littermates and parents were ignoring him. They just lay there and didn’t move. He knew he was the orneriest cub and was always being scolded, but now he was being a good cub and nobody noticed. After eating a few spiders and some grass, he started to howl when he smelled wolf, male, half grown, and not part of the pack. But, it also smelled of not-wolf. When he watched it splash across the Fast Wet, he could tell it was a strange wolf indeed. It walked on its hind legs; the fur on its head reached down to its shoulders, and . . . it had no tail! And, it was tense. Torak grabbed the cub by the scruff and lifted it up, pressing his knife against the cub’s belly. He was famished and needed to eat. The rest of the pack was too rank already, but the cub would provide nourishment. But, he just couldn’t do it. He would just leave it to its own devices. But, the cub kept following him. Eventually, they formed a bond and friendship. Then, Torak started to go in the wrong direction. The cub didn’t know how he knew that, just that he did. He finally convinced Torak to follow him. Was the cub the guide da had spoken of? Sam Marsh May, 2005 for Fall, 2005
