It was only a game, a big adventure. All the boys wanted to be a part of a real “shooting war.” Charley was 15 and this was his chance to be a man. And so, like many of his friends, he went – to Manassas Junction and Bull Run and Gettysburg.
Now it was no longer a game to Charley. “Make it all stop,” Charley screamed. “This is all a terrible mistake.”
In this century it’s been called “shell shock” and “battle fatigue.” Charley left home a 15 year old boy and returned home four years later, a broken man.
