Booktalk:
Jacob grew up blind in the colony of Harmony Station. Just like almost everybody else in Harmony. The entire populace had either been genetically engineered to be blind, or had voluntarily given up their sight to join those with the truesight in the Colony.
Delaney, the daughter of the high councilor, was like a sister to Jacob. But Delaney was different from the others in Harmony. Delaney complained about the conformity of those in the colony. She complained about the restrictions. Finally, she had tried to run away with some seers who had come to work on the ghostbox, the computer that helped the community keep running.
Jacob was confused. He had entertained some of the same thoughts as Delaney, but had carefully kept them to himself. Surely, he would grow out of them. But, he wanted to study music, and the rules of Harmony left him NO say in how his life would be structured. He would be and do what he was told.
Then, Jacob started having headaches . . . migraine-like in intensity. From behind his eyes. And then he began to see . . . light, and then light and dark. Jacob was beginning to develop sight. . . something that Delaney was desperate for. . . but something that would make him different and an outcast.
