Booktalk:
Damaiana was in labor herself when the King's safe-keeper arrived in the middle of the night. Her sister, Angeline, answered the door and accepted the baby that the man left in her charge. The baby would only be safe in another safe-keeper's charge said the man, and both sisters were members of the trade. Angeline took the sleeping infant, let the man whisper the father's name into her ear, and then went to help her sister with her labor, swearing not to reveal the secret to anyone but Damiana until the time was right.
The next morning, the King's safe-keeper was found dead a few miles outside the village. He had committed suicide to prevent anyone from questioning him about the baby.
So, Fiona and Reed were raise as if they were truly brother and sister, although the whole town, having been told of the babe left with Damaiana, but not the secret of the infant's father, was sure that Reed was the King's son. Reed was a wanderer, never able to stay still for a minute, always on the move. Fiona, on the other hand, was calm and sure of herself and her place in the world. She was convinced that she would follow in her mother's footsteps as Safe-Keeper for the town.
But then Fiona told Thomas, one of the family's best friends and a Truth-Teller (one who was unable to tell a lie), what she intended to become. Thomas had simply looked straight at her and said, "No, you won't."
