DEALING WITH DRAGONS
By Patricia Wrede
It’s not easy being a PRINCESS especially when you’re not normal. Comorene’s six sisters were normal; they had long golden hair and sweet dispositions. They did what their parents told them to do, they learned all the things princesses ought to know – like dancing, and embroidery, and drawing and proper etiquette.
Cimorene was different. When people were being polite, they said she was strong-minded. When they were angry or annoyed with her, they said she was as stubborn as a pig. Not only did she have the wrong hair, Cimorene also found all those “proper” things that princesses were supposed to do downright boring. She hated her life. When she was younger, she bullied the armsmaster into giving her fencing lessons.
“NOT PROPER BEHAVIOR FOR A PRINCESS” said the King. And so the fencing lessons stopped.
Next she got the court magician to teach her Magic.
“NOT PROPER BEHAVIOR FOR A PRINCESS” said her father, the King, again. And so the magic lessons ceased as well. As did the Latin Lessons, the Cooking Lessons, the Economics Lessons, and the Juggling Lessons.
“NOT PROPER BEHAVIOR FOR A PRINCESS” was all she ever heard.
Nothing interesting was “proper” behavior for a Princess, Cimorene pouted. And then her parents did the unthinkable – they told her she had to marry Prince Therandil. Cimorene refused.
“I’D RATHER BE EATEN BY A DRAGON,” she muttered. … Then a small voice, emanating from somewhere near her left foot, piped up. “THAT CAN BE ARRANGED.”
And that’s when the fun began. To one very bored, runaway, princess ADD a powerful, fascinating, dangerous dragon named Kazul…and a witch named Morwen, a genie, a death-dealing talking bird, double crossing dragons, magic potions, a stone prince, and evil wizards, and you have the makings of a first class fairy tale.
Cimorene wanted excitement in her life….now, as Kazul’s Princess, she has plenty.
