Booktalk:
"You're stronger than they are." That's what dad had always told me about the demons in the closet. And I had been. Even though I didn't know how or why, I had always been able to defeat them and order them back to where they came from. I would always feel the heat starting to rise just before they attacked. But, then dad had died. In his will, he sent me to Ravenscliff, a dark, mysterious mansion outside Misery Point to be the ward of Mrs. Crandell, the Mistress of the house. The voice in my head told me that it was there that I would learn about my past and my powers. It was a cold and rainy night when I arrived, and everyone that I told where I was headed warned me to avoid the place and its ghosts. Of course, I saw one, a ghost that is, as soon as I arrived. In the light of a tower in the closed off East Wing. A trick of the storms, a reflection, I was told. There were all sorts of rational explanations; said Mrs. Crandell...who obviously had secrets which she was unwilling to share. All sorts of mysteries seemed to hang around the mansion. There was Rolfe Montaigne, who the voice said, "knows what you came here to find," who gave me a ride to the mansion and claimed to have been in jail for killing a young boy just like me. There was the fact that the East Wing is closed off, but somehow seems to be opened at opportune moments for me. Moments when I seem to always get caught by the mysterious, scary servant Simon. There was the tragedy of Emily Muir and her traitorous husband Jackson Muir, both deceased. Then, there was Alexander, the precocious eight-year-old who was obviously, to me, possessed by a demon and determined to make my life miserable...or worse. Not to mention Major Musick, with a 'K,' the television show that seems to have entranced him. Finally, there is the door in the East Wing behind which the demons keep calling to me to let them out...not to mention the demons that begin to appear all over town trying to scare or trick me into releasing them and their brethren.
