Two hundred million dollars!!! When Samuel W. Westing dies, that is the amount of money due his rightful heirs. It just so happens (or does it just happen…?) that Barney Northrup has rented all of the spaces in Sunset Towers to Westing’s potential heirs. When the group is assembled for the reading of the will, this is what is read, “I, Sam Westing, declare this to be my last will and testament and do hereby swear that I did not die of natural causes. My life was taken from me by one of you!” And then the rules of Sam Westing’s game were read. Whoever discovers the identity of the person who took Sam Westing’s life inherits the 200 million dollars!
So who are these assembled people, the potential heirs to Westing’s will, the players of the Westing Game? They are mothers and fathers and children. A dressmaker, a secretary, an inventor, a doctor, a judge. And, oh yes, one was a bookie, one was a burglar, one was a bomber, and one…was a mistake! Barney Northrup had rented one of the apartments to the wrong person!
