Booktalk:
Jack hates poetry. But his teacher, Ms. Stretchberry, won't stop giving her class poetry assignments. As his very first poem says:
“I don’t want to
because boys
don’t write poetry
girls do.”
But Jack can't avoid writing poetry because, after all it’s an assignment. But then something amazing happens. With the help of a teacher, a writer, a pencil, some paper, and of course, a yellow dog, Jack learns he does have something to say.
Here’s his poem entry for January 24.
And here’s what his “concrete poem” looked like.
Some of the poetry entries are responses to poetry by other authors which Ms. Stretchberry has had them read. Those poems are all included in the back of the book.
One thing about poetry novels is they are a very fast read. So if you’re pressed for time and have a book report due, consider a poetry novel. They’re wonderful in more ways than one!
