Miri was small by the mountains standards and has never been allowed to work the stone or to learn quarry-speech like the rest of the village. She just feels useless and irrelevant. So when the announcement is made that there will be a Princess Academy in the old stone minister’s house where those of marriageable age will be trained and from whom the Prince will choose his queen, Miri is determined to surpass the other girls in the competition. Even though she’s still soft on Peder and not at all sure that she wants to be chosen queen.
